The nose is a complex organ. Many people assume that the nose is simply an external feature of the face that has a variable size and contains two nostrils, a tip, and a bridge. The nose is so much more than that! It actually extends from that visible tip, all the way back toward the center of the head.

The inside of the nose is intricately designed with multiple different structures and spaces that are responsible for nasal breathing (nasal septum, nasal valves, and sinuses), air filtration and humidification (turbinates), and transportation of air through its many complexities to the lower airway (lungs).

The internal nose also has protective functions, which can sometimes go awry, leading to sinus infections, headaches, congestion, excessive drainage, problems with smell and taste, and allergies, among many other issues.
