It is the most effective procedure to address significant sagging and smooth deep wrinkles and folds. Women and men who undergo a facelift procedure by Melyssa Hancock, MD or Nathan E. Nachlas, MD can turn back the clock on facial aging, restoring a more youthful look that will last for years to come. Frequently Asked Questions

A facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, is a facial surgery procedure designed to help people reduce the visible signs of aging in the face and neck.

Facelift surgery is the best way to rejuvenate the overall appearance of the face due to the aging process. It may be used to help a person correct fold lines between the nose and mouth, loose skin and excess fat on the neck, and the loss of youthful contours in the face. Benefits of this procedure include:

• Enhanced facial contours
• Youthful facial shape
• Repair of loose skin
• Tighter facial muscles

An individual who displays any of the following signs of aging may prove to be a good candidate for facelift surgery:

• Loose skin
• Volume loss
• Noticeable facial expression lines
• Loss of collagen and/or skin elasticity
• Asymmetrical facial appearance due to aging

The best way to know if you are a candidate is to have a comprehensive facelift consultation with Dr. Hancock or Dr. Nachlas. During your consultation, Dr. Hancock and Dr. Nachlas will learn about your desired rejuvenation results, analyze your facial features, and determine what non-surgical and surgical treatment options will help you achieve your facial rejuvenation treatment goals. Dr. Hancock and Dr. Nachlas will develop a personalized treatment plan designed to help you achieve a balanced, natural-looking facial appearance.

A facelift surgery can help a patient correct many common signs of aging in different areas of the face, such as:

Cheeks: Reduces sagging of the cheeks that often results in an aged and tired appearance.
Jawline: Removes excess skin on the lower jawline.
Neck: Eliminates excess fat and sagging skin in the neck.

A traditional facelift does not address the upper portion of the face, i.e. the forehead and around the eyes. Dr. Hancock and Dr. Nachlas utilize a comprehensive facial rejuvenation approach and will discuss any additional complimentary surgical procedures that may be needed to treat these areas, if needed.

The short answer is that there is no best age! How you age and how well you age are dependent on a lot of different variables, including your genetics, skin quality and texture, and bone structure; thus, the best time for a facelift may be different for you than for someone else. In general, facelift surgery is performed on individuals between the ages of 40 and 80 years old.

At your consultation, Dr. Hancock and Dr. Nachlas will perform a thorough evaluation to determine if you are eligible for facelift surgery, regardless of age. They will generally offer facelift surgery to a patient if they believe it can be performed safely and will help him or her achieve a balanced, natural-looking facial appearance.

While no surgical procedure will stop the aging process, if you continue to take good care of your skin and live a healthy lifestyle, your face will continue to look better than if you had never had a facelift procedure! Living a healthy lifestyle, wearing sunscreen every day, avoiding smoking, and eating a diet rich in vitamins and antioxidants are the best ways to maintain healthy, youthful skin.

Dr. Hancock and Dr. Nachlas know that a natural looking facelift is the best kind! Thus, friends and family members probably won’t be able to tell if a person has undergone a facelift procedure, as treatment results will appear natural.

Furthermore, even though a facelift tightens the facial skin, in the hands of expertly trained facelift surgeons like Dr. Hancock and Dr. Nachlas, it won’t cause the face to appear tight or stretched. Instead, a facelift will help you achieve a natural facial appearance in which the eyes, cheeks, chin, and other facial features appear in perfect harmony.

Dr. Hancock and Dr. Nachlas customize each facelift surgery with the anti-aging needs of the patient in mind in order to help a patient achieve a balanced and natural-looking facial appearance. As a result, Dr. Hancock and Dr. Nachlas may recommend a combination of procedures in conjunction with facelift surgery techniques to ensure you can achieve the best possible results. Some of these procedures include:

  • Neck Lift: Reduces or removes loose or sagging neck skin, excess fat in the lower face or chin, and other visible signs of aging in the neck
  • Brow Lift: Treats drooping brows and deep wrinkles of the forehead, restoring a smoother, more youthful contour to the upper portion of the face
  • Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty): Eliminates excess skin from the upper eyelids and removes under-eye bags and redundant skin from the lower eyelids
  • Submental Liposuction: Eliminates excess fat causing the appearance of a double chin and improves the contours of the chin and jawline
  • Botox: Smooths fine lines, wrinkles, and furrows caused by excessive muscle movements
  • Dermal Fillers: Enhances the facial appearance without surgery by restoring volume to create a more youthful facial contour
  • Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Hair Loss Treatment: Stimulates new hair growth and improves the health and strength of existing hair

The aforementioned procedures may be performed on their own or in conjunction with a Facelift surgery. To determine which procedure or combination of procedures can help a you achieve your desired facial rejuvenation goals, schedule a comprehensive cosmetic consultation with Dr. Hancock or Dr. Nachlas.

Facelift surgery is usually an outpatient procedure performed under intravenous or general anesthesia. Time spent in surgery typically ranges from 2 to 4 hours. The procedure can be combined with other procedures such as a Neck Lift, Brow Lift, Eyelid surgery, or nose surgery for more dramatic results.

After your procedure, your face will be bandaged and typically, you will experience some swelling and bruising. Pain is usually manageable with either prescription or over-the-counter medication. Most patients find that within just two weeks, swelling and bruising has subsided enough to return to work and engage in social activities. It may be a while longer before the full effects of your facelift emerge.
