Botox

Women and men today have more options than ever for delaying the aging process. While a healthy lifestyle is the best way to keep yourself feeling youthful and energetic, diet and exercise alone can’t do much to prevent the signs of aging. The Nose and Sinus Institute offers several non-surgical options for facial rejuvenation.

Botulinum toxin, also known as Botox, is the most popular non-surgical procedure in the U.S. with over 4.5 million of them performed in 2019. Botox is the go-to treatment to improve the appearance of moderate to severe lines and wrinkles on the face, resulting in smoother, younger looking skin. This is a good alternative to a facelift for patients who don’t want or don’t need surgery, or for those who wish to seek preventative treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Botox received FDA approval in 2002 for cosmetic treatment aimed at enhancing the youthful appearance of the face by eliminating wrinkles and fine lines. It gets its name from a toxin that is produced by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum.

Botox injections stop nerve signals from reaching muscles in the face. In doing so, they prevent the facial skin from contracting, lowering a person’s risk of forming forehead lines, crow’s feet and other visible signs of aging.

There are dynamic wrinkles all over the face. When we smile, frown, raise our eyebrows, or squint our eyes, wrinkles are created as a result of those repetitive expressions. Over time, these wrinkles start to become ingrained in the skin, appearing even when one’s face is completely relaxed. Botox is most commonly used to treat the following cosmetic concerns:
• Crows feet
• Frown lines (between the brows, also known as “11 lines”)
• Bunny lines (wrinkles on top of your nose)
• Forehead creases
• Eyebrow lift
• Gummy smile

While Botox is best known for its cosmetic results, Dr. Hancock can also utilize it for many other treatments. Below are some examples of how Botox can be used for non-cosmetic purposes:
• Excessive underarm sweating
• Facial paralysis and synkinesis
• Masseter hypertrophy

The goal of Botox is to help you achieve a balanced, natural-looking facial appearance. Following a successful Botox treatment, you should be able to naturally produce facial expressions. That way, you can enjoy a rejuvenated facial appearance without having to worry about how you look when smiling, frowning, or making other facial expressions.

A Botox treatment generally delivers results that remain visible for about three to six months, but results vary based on the amount of Botox injected and your response to treatment.

Botox delivers temporary facial rejuvenation results. Thus, those who are looking for a permanent facial rejuvenation treatment may need to look beyond Botox to accomplish their goals. In addition to Botox, Dr. Hancock offers a variety of long-term facial rejuvenation procedures and is happy to discuss all of the non-surgical and surgical facial rejuvenation treatments with each patient.

There are several companies that make Botox including Allergan (BOTOX®) Galderma (Dysport®), and Evolus (Jeuveau™). In general, all 3 are types of neuromodulators that block muscle contractions and are used as facial wrinkle treatments. The ultimate decision of which specific neuromodulator to use depends on various patient-related factors and on the personal choice of the patient.

BOTOX®
BOTOX® is the brand name for the botulinum toxin produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum and formulated by Allergan. BOTOX® Cosmetic is specifically FDA approved for the treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles. While BOTOX® is generally the most well-known brand of Botox on the market, there are other companies that make Botox and can be used for similar purposes.

Dysport®
Dysport® is also a neuromodulator derived from botulinum toxin produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. It is made by the company Galderma and is also used to treat moderate to severe lines and wrinkles on the face. Patients who have a weakened response to BOTOX® may benefit from Dysport®.

Jeuveau™
Jeuveau™ is the latest addition to the neuromodulator game and was approved by the FDA in 2019 for the temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe lines and wrinkles of the face in adults. Jeuveau™ is meant to be a play on the French word “nouveau,” which means “recent” or “modern.” It is similar to Botox® and Dysport® in that all 3 are extracted from the same type of bacteria and are used to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe wrinkles and lines in adults. Jeuveau™ follows the same procedure and has similar side effects as the other brands.
